Engineers Without Borders UK welcomes the publication of the Engineering Council’s Strategy 2030, highlighting its commitment to ethical practice, global responsibility, inclusion, sustainability and public trust as an important step for the profession.

Engineers Without Borders UK welcomes the Engineering Council’s Strategy 2030. Its clear commitment to strengthening ethical practice, global responsibility, inclusion, sustainability and public trust marks an important step for the UK engineering profession.
We are particularly encouraged to see global responsibility placed at the heart of the Engineering Council’s strategic direction. For many years, Engineers Without Borders UK has championed a shift towards globally responsible engineering practices that ensure the profession is working to serve all people within planetary limits.
This recognition of global responsibility creates a powerful opportunity for professional engineering institutions, educators, employers and practising engineers to embed these principles more consistently throughout their work.
The challenge now is implementation. Global responsibility must become more than a phrase. It must shape how engineers are educated, assessed, supported and recognised throughout their careers. It must influence the questions engineers ask at the start of a project, the communities and stakeholders they involve, the trade-offs they are prepared to challenge, and the impacts they are accountable for over time. This is where the real shift begins.
The Strategy 2030 sets a clear direction for the engineering profession. The opportunity now lies in delivery. Engineers Without Borders UK will continue working with students, educators, industry and institutions to help turn this ambition into practice.
