What is Reshaping Engineering?

Reshaping Engineering is a virtual design challenge, run in partnership with AzuKo since 2022, that invites student and professional participants from around the world to design solutions that could reshape how engineering is taught and practised.

Participants tackle a real-world brief that facilitates a deeper and broader understanding of the impacts of engineering and the approaches for putting global responsibility at the heart of all we do.

What's involved?

  1. Join a team: Participants will self-select or be assigned to a team with a diverse range of experience and expertise.
  2. Get started: Together you will tackle a real-world design brief, identifying a key challenge area within engineering education or practice before designing a solution using the design thinking process.
  3. Receive guidance: Teams are assigned a professional mentor with expertise in globally responsible engineering approaches, who will provide guidance and feedback throughout the design process.
  4. Be assessed: The designs will then be assessed by a panel of expert judges who are already leading change in the sector.
  5. Find out the winners: The winners will be announced during a celebration event.

Throughout the month, participants are taken on a learning journey grounded in the Global Responsibility Competency Compass, exploring key resources that will deepen their understanding of sector-wide challenges and the current initiatives working to address them.

Who is this for?

Reshaping Engineering is for anyone looking to grow their professional skills in line with ever-evolving global challenges – whether you’re working in the engineering sector or not, have a technological or non-technological background, or you’re completing your studies.

We encourage those who are in employment to consider how this opportunity could contribute to Chartership or CPD Accreditation, and to explore with your employer how the challenge could be embedded in your day-to-day work.

Embedding the challenge into your curriculum

We’ve successfully piloted Reshaping Engineering as a credit-bearing course module with City, St George’s, University of London. The programme integrates real-world design challenges directly into academic learning, helping students develop skills in global responsibility, systems thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

If you’re interested in exploring how the challenge could be embedded in your own curricula, get in touch with us to discuss options at [email protected].

Hear from participants

"[The Reshaping Engineering challenge] is hands down one of the best professional engineering activities I've done in my career so far."

Bethany Hall, Reshaping Engineering 2022 winner

"I learned a lot about bringing together a big picture idea […] Often clients come to us and they say I have this very specific thing that’s broken and needs fixing […] It was nice to step outside of that design process and think about holistic solutions and also think about how to craft a solution for a problem that’s not so specific, that was a learning exercise for me."

Erika Rosenstein, Reshaping Engineering 2022 winner

"Reshaping Engineering merges the theoretical and the practical in a fun and thought-provoking way. This is the only way to truly learn something."
