Welcome to TAMIL NADU ‘THE LAND OF THE TAMILS’, the location for this year’s Engineering For People Design Challenge!

Tamil Nadu is one of 29 Indian states, it is located in South India bordering with the states of Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The capital city is Chennai, formerly known as Madras. Tamil Nadu is the eleventh largest state in India by area and the sixth-most populous. Tamil Nadu is the second-largest state economy in India. The population of Tamil Nadu stands at around 72 million people with 35 million people living in urban areas and 37 million in rural areas. This year’s design challenge is focused on the rural communities located in Tamil Nadu.

Whilst there is an increasing trend of rural to urban migration the vast majority of people in Tamil Nadu still live in rural areas and suffer the impacts of poor water and sanitation provision, a lack of waste management, limited transport and digital infrastructure and unreliable energy provision. The population of rural areas has been steadily increasing in the last few decades and this trend is expected to continue even with urban migration. Many organisations and individuals are working hard to innovate and come up with ideas to address the issues that rural communities are currently facing in Tamil Nadu. For the 2018/19 Engineering for People Design Challenge, we ask you to discover more about Tamil Nadu and propose engineering innovations and interventions that could make a difference and add to existing projects and initiatives underway.

REMEMBER: Your academic supervisor should be your first port of call for your queries, but we also have a Discussion Forum where you can ask us, and others, questions. You will need to conduct your own research beyond the information available here to show your depth of understanding and justify your decisions to your academic supervisor and the judging panels if you get through to the Engineering for People Design Challenge Grand Finals.

THIS YEAR’S PARTNER: PRAKTI

Engineers Without Borders UK have been working with Prakti for five years to help develop and produce fuel efficient cook stoves at scale. Prakti is a social enterprise dedicated to disrupting decades of biomass cookstove design through the creative marriage of rigorous social science field research and meticulous engineering. Prakti are based just outside of the city of Pondicherry in Tamil Nadu.
