Bristol Hub
In 2004 EWB-UK launched its research initiative to provide a bridge between universities, students, development NGOs and local communities with technical research requirements. This has led to the formation of the Bristol Research Team, working within the university to promote research in the development sector.
EWB-UK Projects List
An extract from the EWB-Bristol AGM 2007, reviewing the past year of events:
The Havana Water Project saw four EWB-Bristol committee members travel out to Havana to work at CUJAE, the Engineering University of Havana, as part of Bristol's Mondialogo Engineering Award implementation. Another of the larger projects has been the Uganda Infocentre Project, which is almost completed. This project eventually aims to identify schools in rural areas and provide them with computers and internet services, train teachers to improve their computer literacy, educate people on how to use their internet to their benefit and to help boost the economy. In a similar vein, we're using what's been learnt throughout the implementation of the Uganda Project, and the previous Infocentros Osnu Project in Ecuador, to put together a document outlining a methodology for the creation of sustainable IT classrooms in developing countries’ schools.
<!--GENERAL INFORMATION-->Research projects are usually carried out in the UK, either as a project within a student s degree (for example, a 3rd or 4th year accredited degree project), or as an extra-curricular project run through the university EWB branch.
The Research Projects at EWB-Bristol have been increasingly successful and high profile over the last few years. Highlights from last year included;
- A 3rd year Mechanical Engineering Research project undertaken by Vivek Mahadevan as part of his degree, investigating into methods for short-term food preservation in conjunction with the NGO EngIndia.
- A project run by students from Bristol and CUJAE, the Technical University of Havana, investigating uses for rice husk; focus was on burning the husk for energy production, and using the ash as a cement admixture.
- The Rice Husk Management Research Project was entered into the world-wide Mondialogo Engineering Award and is now short-listed as an Award Finalist. Our current Bristol President, Ian Baggs, will be flying out to Mumbai, India in December alongside one of our Cuban counterparts, Karel Pérez Alejo, to present the project to an international jury; a successful trip will provide economic resources to begin implementing the technology in Cuba!
- This term, a new extra-curricular project has been set up at Bristol and it looks to be as exciting as any; this project focuses on waterfree sanitation solutions for urban India, and is done in conjunction with the NGO Vigyan Ashram.
We also intend to improve accessibility to research projects from mid 2008 onwards, with the intention that students will be able to incorporate some projects into their degree during the next academic cycle.
