SUMMARY:Doughnut Economics for engineers: From theory to practice
DESCRIPTION:Hosted in collaboration with the Doughnut Economics Action Lab. \nJoin Engineers Without Borders UK and Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL) for an interactive webinar exploring how Doughnut Economics 3.0 can reshape engineering practice in a complex\, interconnected world. \nIn this session\, we’ll explore how the Doughnut Economics model offers a practical visual framework for understanding global responsibility in engineering – helping engineers design solutions that meet everyone’s needs without overshooting the planet’s limits. \nThe session will open with an introduction to the updated Doughnut Economics model from Ilektra Kouloumpi\, Sectors Lead at DEAL\, including real-world examples of how it is being applied across sectors and what it means in practice for engineering. We’ll explore how key concepts\, such as the circular economy\, can influence engineering decisions\, success metrics and design briefs. \nThis will be followed by an interactive panel discussion with engineers and practitioners from DEAL\, Expedition Engineering and Elliott Wood. Drawing on their experience across the built environment and community-led projects\, the panel will examine how Doughnut Economics can move engineering beyond “doing less harm” towards regenerative\, place-based outcomes. \nSpeakers\nIlektra Kouloumpi\, Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL)\nIlektra is a sustainability engineering and post-growth economics expert\, and Sectors Lead at the Doughnut Economics Action Lab. She is widely recognised for her work on the Amsterdam City Doughnut and has led major sustainability initiatives with governments\, cities and global institutions worldwide. \nDr Jonathan Truslove\, Engineers Without Borders UK\nJonathan is an interdisciplinary researcher and Education and Skills Lead at Engineers Without Borders UK\, working to embed global responsibility in engineering education and practice. He brings experience from sustainable water and sanitation projects with rural communities across Scotland\, Rwanda\, Malawi and Cambodia. \nMike Sefton\, Expedition Engineering\nMike is a Structural Engineer and Chartered Environmentalist at Expedition Engineering\, focused on systemic decarbonisation of UK infrastructure. He is actively involved in sector-wide climate action through the Institution of Structural Engineers and Construction Declares. \nIan Poole\, Elliott Wood\nIan is a Chartered Engineer and Environmentalist at Elliott Wood\, leading innovation across retrofit\, reuse and low-carbon design. He has contributed to national Net Zero building standards and brings policy\, advisory and delivery experience to embedding environmental stewardship in practice. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Purpose in Practice: Shaping meaningful careers in engineering
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to welcome you to a joint event between Engineers Without Borders UK and Engineer a Career!\nWhat does it mean to build a career in engineering that feels impactful in a job market that’s changing fast? \nGraduates today are entering a profession full of opportunity\, but also uncertainty. While engineering skills are in demand\, many early-career engineers are asking deeper questions: What kind of work is worth doing? How do my values fit into my career choices? And how do I navigate a sector grappling with climate breakdown\, inequality and rapid technological change? \nJoin Engineers Without Borders UK and Engineer a Career for an evening of conversation and connection. Together\, we’ll explore what purposeful engineering careers look like in practice and how engineers can shape pathways that align technical expertise with social and environmental impact. \nThe evening will feature: \n\nA welcome from Engineers Without Borders UK and Engineer a Career\nA panel discussion with industry leaders\, sharing honest reflections on navigating early careers\, finding alignment\, and adapting in a shifting landscape\nSpace for questions\, conversation\, and informal connection over food and drinks\n\nThis event is for students\, early-career engineers\, educators\, and anyone curious about how engineering can be a force for good\, whether you’re confident about your next steps or still figuring things out. \nKey information:\n\nDate: Thursday 26 March\nTime: 17:30 – 20:00 GMT\nLocation: AECOM Offices\, Glasgow\nRefreshments provided\nFree to attend\, though you’re very welcome to make an optional donation via the registration form\n\nRegister
