Project Management Training 2005/06
A half-day training session on how to search for contacts, correspond with an NGO, and set up an overseas project for EWB-UK to run as part of the placements scheme was run by Steve Jones. This was the first time this had been run.
Attendance was good (about 20 people from various branches). Feedback was mostly positive, and has been summarised in one of the attached documents by the EWB Imperial projects team.
This was run in conjunction with the course on fundraising for EWB-UK run by Kim Roach the day before.
The next time it runs it is likely to be incorporated into the planned National Training Conference.
External consultancy project on EWB-UK's organisational structure March 07
As part of my Masters course I was involved in carrying out a project on EWB-UK as one of a team of outside consultants. I won't go too much into the details or scope of the project nor the consultation we undertook to reach our conclusions, trust me that it was reasonably comprehensive.

Hydropolitics Lecture
Hydropolitics: Water Shortage and Conflict
Professor Ewan W Anderson
With a focus on the Middle East, the region with the most acute shortage and one most commonly mentioned in the context of water wars, water will be discussed as a strategic resource and a range of possible counter measures to alleviate scarcity will be considered. The potential for conflict and the likely flashpoints will be assessed. Is it all polemic or will there be fighting over water?
Ewan Anderson is Emeritus Professor of Geopolitics at the University of Durham, having been a member of staff in the Geography and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies Departments, and Visiting Professor at the University of Exeter . Professor Anderson's research, writing and teaching has focused upon geopolitics: the application of all facets of geography in political decision-making and development studies.
The General University Programme (GULP) recommences on Wednesday, 7 February 2007 in 8 West, 1.1. Admission is free, just turn up on the evening. Free parking available in the West Car Park. All sessions run from 5.15pm until 6.15pm with the exception of the first lecture, which starts at 6pm.

EWB Glasgow- Christmas Ceilidh
Ward off the dark winter nights, by dancing in tartan!
Everyone is most welcome to EWB Glasgow's Christmas Ceilidh. We have a live ceilidh band, lots of engineers (and non-engineers!) letting off steam, we have raffle prizes, and if you come along you will have a great time. See the attached poster for details.
EWB Oxford: The Best Thing in Engineering Ever
For 5 years the Comedy Research Project has been testing the hypothesis that science can be funny. Audiences exposed to their shows have consistently laughed up to 63% more than control audiences locked into adjacent rooms, suggesting that Dr. Helen Pilcher and Timandra Harkness are more than just placebo comedians.
Now they plan to bring the same rigorous research methodologies to engineering. Facts will be deformed by the forces of twisted humour, and the audience’s tolerance for puns will be measured with the most up-to-date equipment. We have no plans to test the audience to destruction, but rapid joke prototyping software will be used on any hecklers

EWB Glasgow- Presentation on Microfinance and Social Mobilisation
Wateraid Fundraising Pub Crawl
EWB Bath & Bristol joint fundraising event for Wateraid
Date: Saturday 18th November 2006
Meet: 1.20pm Temple Meads Station
For the upcoming World Toilet Day, EWB Bath is hosting a fundraising event for Wateraid. There will be a speaker with food and drinks, followed by a pub crawl! The pub crawl will be themed "bathroom" - so get out your showercaps, towels and rubber duckies! The event will carry-on until round about 10pm (or whenever you feel like leaving).
It should be great fun - so please drop me an email Derek Sheen if you want to come.
ICE Sustainable & Appropriate Development
Our speaker from MSF will be giving an insight into the actions and support needed in the aftermath of an incident occurring and will provide an insight into how one might get involved further in this type of work.
There will be time for questions after the presentations and this is your chance to raise any queries you have surrounding disaster relief or ongoing development work.
These talks will provide an ideal opportunity for members to increase their awareness of appropriate development from the people who have been there and seen current practises; therefore helping members to gain the experience associated with development objective E3 (contribute to sustainable development through engineering activities).
