  • Branch Project - To develop an affordable irrigation system for Gambian Farmers

Gambia experiences an annual dry season, with virtually zero rainfall for nine months. During this season most agricultural land is left barren. This increases dependency on food imports, and high food prices. For the average Gambian this often means enjoying three full meals in a day is reserved for special occasions.

Gambia has a plentiful groundwater supply and a borehole never far off. However getting water out of the wells and onto the crops is far too difficult without any irrigation system. Currently Irrigation is only available to the tiny minority of rich farmers, with access to pipe borne water and electric water pumps powered by diesel generators.

The overwhelming majority of common farmers do not have access to piped water and the cost of conventional irrigation systems and the associated fuel costs are beyond consideration. The benefits of providing conventional irrigation systems to such farmers are short lived as the technical knowledge and materials required to maintain such systems are not readily available.

EWB Swansea is working with the Department of State for Agriculture in Gambia to develop an affordable irrigation system for small scale rural farmers. The system will must be locally made, from locally available materials and technical knowledge and must have negligible running costs in order to be sustainable.

With the expertise of professionals, we will be inviting engineering students and others, to explore possible solutions. We are currently looking for people who have experience this field so if there is some way anyone feels they could contribute, Please contact us.
