Research Grants

General Information

Grants are available to assist students carrying out research within the UK. For project implementation abroad or for international projects, please see the Bursaries Programme.

EWB-UK Research Grants are only available to students undertaking research with EWB-UK. Please see Information for Students for details how you can affiliate your project with EWB-UK or become involved with EWB-UK Research.


What they Fund

Research Grants are available to give between £20 - £250 of financial support towards:

  • learning opportunities: non EWB-UK training courses, conferences, conferences or seminars within the UK to further a student's understanding of their research field
  • reasonable travel costs: for example, to visit an expert in the field or a training course. Please note that EWB-UK would expect all travel costs to be booked in advance, and for Young Persons Railcards or equivalent to be used if possible.
  • books and journals: please make sure these are not already available from the EWB-UK Library or your university library services
  • prototype materials
  • test materials
  • possible other costs: please enquire if you are unsure whether your request is suitable.

Funding Rounds

  • First Funding Round February 12th 2008 – April 30th 2008
  • Second Funding Round May 1st 2008 – August 31st 2008

EWB-UK has fixed amounts of grant funding available for each funding round. Grants are awarded to applications which EWB-UK Research feels will strongly benefit the Research Project on a first-come-first-served basis. This means that applicants are strongly advised to submit requests for funding as soon as possible to the start of a funding round.

EWB-UK Research will need to be convinced that the amount requested will benefit the Research Project accordingly. Please note that smaller funding requests may be more likely to be granted.

The Research Team will endeavour to advise all applicants whether their application has been successful within two weeks, and feedback will be provided for unsuccessful applicants.
