How the EWB-UK Research Programme works in brief:
There are two main paths to undertaking engineering in international development research with EWB-UK.
Path 1: Through applying to undertake one of our available research briefs.
Path 2: By affiliating your own research that falls within the ethos of EWB-UK.
Path 1: EWB-UK Research Briefs
The EWB-UK Research Projects can be undertaken in a variety of ways; the most common is as a final year degree project, but the research proposals can also be undertaken as a group project in the second year or as a PhD topic for example.
The EWB-UK Research Programme is designed to be flexible depending on how the university, the student, the academic and the partner organisation wishes to undertake the research project. All the EWB-UK Research Briefs displayed on our ‘Available Research Briefs’ page provide an insight into the issues identified for research and the possible avenues of investigation. It is therefore expected that further suggestions are discussed between the partner organisation, researcher and supervisor to definitively scope out the technical research brief.
If you would like to apply to undertake one of our research briefs:
- Take a look at our Available Research Briefs and take a note of the titles that interest you (you can apply for more than one).
- Find yourself an academic who is willing to supervise you for this project.
- Fill out our Researcher Application Form to let us know that you are interested in undertaking these particular research briefs.
- We will then confirm your application and once a title is decided upon we will put you in touch with the partner organisation.
- Collaborate with your supervisor, EWB-UK and the partner organisation to fully scope out the research brief so that it is suitable for your academic institution.
Path 2: Affiliating your Research with EWB-UK
You can affiliate research with EWB-UK if it falls within the ethos of EWB-UK and have access to the same benefits and support that the rest of our researchers are entitled to. If you are interested in finding out more information about affiliating any research that you are doing then please take a look at our affiliation page or simply fill out this Affiliation Form.

Throughout the duration of the research project, EWB-UK acts mainly as a facilitator providing networking links and platform opportunities to discuss the research with other researchers, academics and practitioners, such as at our annual research conference.
Upon completion of the research project, you are expected to hand the report, along with a summarised mini-report, to EWB-UK and the partner organisation. EWB-UK will then publish completed projects online - subject to the checking of accuracy, quality and any issues relating to intellectual property rights and confidentiality.
