Energy Forum
| Partner organisation: Project title: Location: Start: Duration: No. of placements: Level: | Energy Forum Improving the efficiency of electrical power generation used to power cooking appliances in off-grid villages in Sri Lanka Colombo, Sri Lanka 1st July 2010 3 months 1 No Prior Experience Needed |
A 3-month placement to help improve the efficiency of electrical power generation used to power cooking appliances in the off-grid villages. The generators run on bio-gas (created locally in the digesters in villages) or petrol/kerosene.
What work will I be doing?
At present the efficiency of the power generation is low, and needs to be improved, either through improvement of present gas generation process and improvement of the technical features of the generators, or by finding an acceptable suitable replacement for generators used. The aim is to increase the gas production in the digesters and improve the quality of gas produced, and the work will include familiarisation with the current way of creation of bio-gas in the local digesters and currently used generators, and research and analysis of the different mixtures of bio-mass available to improve the bio-gas production in the digesters. You will also assess the efficiency of the generators and investigate the potential improvements of towards more efficient and affordable generators (pressure regulation, deregulation of generator, change of carburetor; finding at the market a new type of affordable, more efficient generator).
Who will I be working for?
The Energy Forum of Sri Lanka is a non profit organisation working to create an environment that enables the promotion and adoption of renewable and distributed energy, energy efficiency and integrated sustainable resource management mechanisms to alleviate poverty, to address energy capacity deficiencies and to protect the environment.
As a network of individuals and organisations from government institutions, Provincial Councils, the private sector, NGOs, utilities, universities, and research institutions, the Energy Forum serves as a network hub for non-partisan energy and waste related information and research. The Energy Forum, which was originally a project of ITDG, became a non profit organisation in 1999. For more information http://www.efsl.lk/
