Summer 2009 Placements

Below are the placements that EWB-UK supported in 2009. Click on the link to read the project briefs.

 

12 month Placements:

Partner: SIBAT - Sibol ng Agham at Teknolohiya - Philippines.
Title: Community-based renewable energy systems.
Start: 1st July 2009.
Outline: One 12 month placement with SIBAT, a Filipino non-governmental organisation developing and installing community-based renewable energy systems, including micro-hydro systems, solar PV water pumps and wind turbines.

6 month Placements:

Partner: Shelter Centre - Switzerland.
Title: Resources research and dissemination.
Start date: Two placements starting early April; two starting early October.
Outline: Four 6 month placements working with Shelter Centre assisting on one of a number of projects.

Partner: CRT - Centre for Rural Technology Nepal - Nepal.
Title: Design, develop and test a hydraulic ram pump.
Start date: 1st July 2009.
Outline: One 6 month placement to design, develop and pilot test an environmentally sound hydraulic ram pump in Nepal.

Partner: GVEP - Global Village Energy Partnership - Kenya.
Title: Developing Energy Enterprises Project, East Africa.
Start date: 1st July 2009.
Outline: One 6 month placement supporting GVEP International’s project to increase the availability and quality of energy products and services in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda through the development of micro and small energy enterprises.

Partner: LIRE - Lao Institute for Renewable Energy - Laos PDR.
Title: Research into Rural Energy and Water.
Start date: 1 July 2009.
Outline: One 6 month placement which encompasses rural bio-fuel generation, gasification of crop residues, software development for hybrid electricity grids, and development of rural water purification systems. The project will also involve collaboration with a local renewable energy provider, Sunlabob.

Partner: PiD - Partners in Development - South Africa.
Title: Sustaining rope and washer pumps.
Start date: 1st July 2009.
Outline: One 6 month placement improving the sustainability and reliability of family-centred water supply in the remote parts of Maputaland, South Africa. This involves the continuation of work by a previous EWB-UK volunteer to monitor, evaluate, and where necessary improve on the design of rope and washer pumps used in conjunction with shallow wells.

Partner: UWCM - Uganda Women Concern Ministry - Uganda.
Title: Rural water and sanitation pilot project
Start date: 1st of July 2009
Outline: One 6 month placement involving the implementation of a water and sanitation project which will deliver a sustainable water supply and appropriate sanitation to a village in Eastern Uganda.

Partner: RCSC - The Royal Commonwealth Society of Cameroon - Cameroon.
Title: Kurume Water Project Initiative.
Start date: 1st July 2009.
Outline: Three 6 month placements to rehabilitate the Kurume water storage tank, treatment of the water and extending the area covered by the water supply.

Partner: PRODECI - Ecuador.
Title: Assistance in the Design and Construction of Built Infrastructure and/or Clean Water Supply Projects in rural Communities of Northern Ecuador.
Start Date: 1st July 2009.
Outline: Two 6 month placements providing engineering assistance for the delivery of built infrastructure or clean water supply projects, in sub-tropical rural communities of Imbabura Province, Northern Ecuador.

3 month Placements:

Partner: AIDECO - Anbdour & Imi n’tizghte Association pour le Développement et Coopérativité - Morocco.
Title: Construction, renovation and expansion of local irrigation and agricultural infrastructure.
Start date: 1st September 2009.
Outline: Two 3 month placements to increase the agricultural productivity in the villages of Anbdour and Imi n’tizghte and provide a model for development in the other villages of the Ammeln valley.

Partner: ACTED - Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development - Indonesia.
Title: Development and rehabilitation of an island’s rural road network.
Start date: 1st July 2009.
Outline: One 3 month placement working closely with beneficiary communities to improve the road infrastructure across the island of Nias, helping to directly and indirectly improve the quality of life of local populations, ACTED is an international organisation with local programmes in Indonesia. (Possibility of salaried role following successful completion of project).

Partner: ACTED - Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development - Indonesia.
Title: Disaster risk reduction.
Start date: 1st July 2009.
Outline: One 3 month placement working closely with local communities to develop and implement projects that reduce devastation in the aftermath of disasters, ACTED is an international organisation with local programmes in Indonesia. (Possibility of salaried role following successful completion of project).

Partner: NSET - National Society for Earthquake Technology - Nepal.
Title: Developing the governmental schools earthquake safety programme.
Start date: 1st July 2009.
Outline: One 3 month placement helping to develop guidelines for the Government programme on schools earthquake safety.

Partner: REDES - El Salvador.
Project title: Investigation into housing and sanitation in rural communities of El Salvador.
Start date: 1st July 2009.
Outline: Two 3 month placements working with a small NGO, to carry out surveys, assessments and then make recommendations on housing, sanitation and social projects in rural communities in El Salvador.

Partner: ARTI - Appropriate Rural Technology Institute - India.
Title: Rural energy production from biogas.
Start date: 1st July 2009.
Outline: Two 3 month placements with a mid-size NGO that promotes rural development in Maharashtra, central India. This is a research and development based placement investigating the effectiveness of biogas electricity generating systems.

Partner: SELCO - India.
Title: Improved cooking stoves.
Start date: 1st July 2009 OR 1st November 2009.
Outline: Two 3 month placements working in SELCO’s innovations department to research, develop and trial a prototype 'Improved Cooking Stove'. Indoor air pollution from the burning of solid fuels for cooking is the fourth largest cause of death in the world's poorest countries, killing more than 1.5m people each year worldwide. The improved cooking stove is a simple yet effective way of reducing smoke inhalation and improving health and quality of life.

Partner: Aptivate - UK.
Title: Software development; web technologies development; research and information dissemination.
Start date: 1st July 2009.
Outline: Two 3 month placements based in Cambridge. Aptivate develops ICT services that facilitate communication for unconnected communities. The volunteer will be office based, developing webware and software.

Partner: CSE - Centre for Science and Environment - India.
Title: Campaign research.
Start date: 1 July 2009.
Outline: One 3 month placement where the volunteer will research and develop reports for CSE's ‘Down to Earth’ publication.

Partner: Shelter Associates - India.
Title: GIS mapping.
Start date: 1st July 2009.
Outline: Two 3 month placements in Data Analysis and GIS mapping (including using open source programming solutions) to help map and analyse slum areas in Pune India. These maps are then used to help provide baseline information for development plans such as housing and sanitation plans.

Partner: RUCHI - Rural centre for human interests - India.
Title: Shyamaghat Model Rainwater Village.
Start date: 1st July 2009.
Outline: Two 3 month placements to improve access to water and provide basic hygiene facilities. To assist RUCHIs dedicated health workers in educating villagers on hygiene and health.

Partner: RUCHI - Rural centre for human interests - India.
Title: Neri Ratoli Cold Storage.
Start date: 1st July 2009.
Outline: Two 3 month placements involving the design and construction of a cold storage facility in rural India which local farmers can use instead of travelling over 100 km away to the nearest store.

Partner: KACCAD - Kyosiga Community Christian Association for Development - Uganda.
Title: Construction of a community and volunteer centre.
Start date: 1st July 2009.
Outline: One 3 month placement in Uganda to construct a community and volunteer centre and farm houses.
