Growing Up: The Rise and Rise of EWB-UK
  How is a charity with only three paid members of staff able to support 16 branches in the UK, manage over 34 placements abroad and stay at the forefront of some of the most exciting research projects in the development field? And what's more why does it keep expanding?

FULL-TIME CEO FOR EWB-UK ANNOUNCED
  Engineers without Borders-UK will have its first ever paid Chief Executive Officer from December funded by The Vodafone Foundation. Andrew Lamb was one of the six winners of the 'World of Difference' programme established by The Vodafone Foundation. EWB-UK looks forward to him working to develop the identity, organisation systems and capacity of this vibrant young charity.

  Manufacturing engineering graduate Sarah Ong applied her education in one of the poorest countries of Central Asia. Funded by an EWB-UK Bursary, she spent the spring in the mountainous terrain of Tajikistan to work on an income generation project for locals from yak down (fine hair)

  The International Design Development Summit (IDDS), a unique set-up drawing on the experiences of development practitioners from different countries and backgrounds, led to a path-breaking development, which promises to take research on HIV prevention a step further.
29/08/2008   Olympic Silver for EWB-UK Volunteer
  A former EWB-UK volunteer has won a silver medal for Great Britain at the Beijing Olympics. Emma Pooley, who did an EWB-UK placement in Honduras in 2003, won a silver medal in the Cycling Time Trial event, beating third place Karin Thurig from Switzerland by over 34 seconds.

How EWB-UK volunteers are helping REDES fund its projects in El Salvador
  Two EWB-UK volunteers could help to decide how a local NGO funds its projects in El Salvador. Caroline Cage, a sixth year architecture student, and Berta Moya, a third year biochemical engineer, began work on the joint EWB-UK/REDES project at the start of July.

Tri-Disciplinary Course: Places Still Available!
  From learning about the benefits of biogas to building solar water heaters, EWB-UK's Tri-Disciplinary Course introduces the participant to both the theory and the practical application of some of the technologies and techniques used by NGOs in the field.

  It may sound wishfully ambitious. But if everything goes well, Calum Thompson, an EWB-UK volunteer, may well be drawing up a set of parameters and testing engines running on biogas in practice in a small city on the West coast of India.

EWB-UK at International Development Design Summit
  Six students from EWB-UK are working this month at the International Development Design Summit, undertaking an intensive month-long process of developing new technological solutions to the real world problems in the developing world.

  36 volunteers - both university students and recent graduates - will from July 2008 embark on a variety of projects to support the work of nearly 20 organisations worldwide, helping to remove the technological barriers to development which can so often hold people and communities in poverty.

OCHA News Centre  The UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs runs a news centre with press releases, newsletters, official briefings and speeches, and - most interestingly, I think - regular situation reports on ongoing humanitarian operations. Great for keeping up-to-date with current issues in the humanitarian relief field.
ReliefWeb  Run by REUTERS, ReliefWeb is the world’s leading on-line gateway to information (documents and maps) on humanitarian emergencies and disasters. An independent vehicle of information, designed specifically to assist the international humanitarian community in effective delivery of emergency assistance, it provides timely, reliable and relevant information as events unfold, while emphasizing the coverage of "forgotten emergencies" at the same time.
IRIN  Another OCHA-related (but independent) news website. Based in Nairobi, IRIN's principal role is to provide news and analysis about sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and parts of Asia for the humanitarian community.
Developments 
Developments is a free quarterly magazine from the UK Government’s Department for International Development designed to increase awareness of development issues.
