Governance Issues Related to Infrastructure Services
A major international development NGO, Practical Action, are interested in gaining a better understanding of the dynamics of participation in their projects. Issues to consider include: Why people participate? Who participates? How sustainable is the participation? Where the participation leads to? and Why in some cases it falls apart after completion of the project? They are also interested in understanding more about the community based organisations (CBO’s) formed around the infrastructure services. How the community governance work for CBOs? and How the savings and credits benefit different groups.
Practical Action are also interested to further understand the importance of knowledge and communication in promoting good governance. Community leadership (including political, tribal and religious leadership) is also important for them in terms of their role in promoting infrastructure services. For students who would like to focus more on the larger picture, they are also interested in investment planning, borrowing, private sector flows and China-India influence on the infrastructure services. Cost recovery and tariff settings are also important areas of interest. Please note that the context is urban slums and low income settlements.
Due to a lack of resources, Practical Action are able to consider only postgraduates and final year students.
