EWB Bristol Research

EWB-UK's research intiative was launched in 2004 with the aim of providing a bridge between universities, students, development NGOs and local communities with technical research requirements. EWB-Research projects encourage students to explore the development sector, and make a real impact with their knowledge.

For Bristol students, the options available are suitable to take up as your 3rd or 4th year degree project. You can be an individual student, or a group. If accepted, you would need to confirm with your supervisor that they are happy for you to undertake this.

Proposed Projects

Featured Project - Earthquake Resistant Housing In Nepal

Organiser - Dr Suby Bhattacharya
Partner Organisation - NSET (National Society for Earthquake Technology)
Project Brief - Project Brief PDF

Earthquakes are a widespread problem in Nepal, largely due to the poor build quality of the housing. As such a solution is necessary which uses readily available materials and is quick and simple to implement.

The Earthquake Resistant Housing Project involves exploring the use of polypropylene packaging strips as a method of housing reinforcement. Whilst this does not completely preserve the structure, it can give valuable time for people inside to get outside in the event of an earthquake, potentially preventing the loss of life. The project was started two years ago at Oxford University, and has since won a Mondialogo Award. Students taking part will be able to help research and distribute this technology, as well as perform shake table tests in the BLADE laboratory.

If you are interested in taking up the project next year or have any further questions, please contact Dr Suby Bhattacharya before the end of term for more information.
