1) National Exec updates - 10 mins

- EWB-UK Employees - Now have Louise Bloom acting as temp Research, Placements, Publicity & Training employee. We have a research employee (full time) starting in June and others coming along. Been discussions about CEO position. Should it be paid / student / Prof / sabatical.

- Publicity - New email lists / online newsletter.
Anita Goyal & Tim White might be writing a regular NCE article following one of our placements

- Training -

- Placements -129 Applicants (last year approx 200), 107 Students, 19 Professionals (6 MWH, 3 Arup)
30 Offers made & accepted, 8 remaining (including Nigeria - year long placement). 3/2: Male / female. SEND STATS

- Research - Conference at IStructE on 18 Apr. Just under 70 people on the day. Lots of new leads to follow for contacts and for project ideas, and already have 2 new potential research proposals. See the review on the webpage for more info (http://www.ewb-uk.org/node/3480)

- Bursaries - 8 given out in first round. Round II now open

- Fundraising - £25k unrestricted Happold Trust
Big Event, now a dinner, organised by Claire Curtis-Thomas MP, hope to raise £60k

 

2) Regional / programme updates - 20 mins

- Scotland - Mott Mac talk joint with RedR. Richard Gowan, success. Branch Glasgow had AGM, new committee. Branch Edinburgh, got a good online questionnaire. May talk being organised. Charitable status - open streams of funding.

- Wales - Branch Cardiff - essentials of humanitarian practise joint RedR course, energy course - some Professionals attending and helping run. Application put in for next £20k from WAG. Welsh Assembly has set up website linking lots of charities. New committee just started

- London - Nothing

- Brighton - 2 new committees at Sussex & Brighton Uni, 11 people. Wants fair trade suppliers for EWB-UK t-shirts. Taking orders. Mott Mac did a biomass talk at the IET and one of the founders of Aptivate.

- North West / Sheffield - Branch AGM. National Grid and Arup Sheffield Profs want to get involved.

- Cambridge - Regular (weekly) emails going out

- Birmingham - Helped the Birmingham branch to set up the bursaries panel. We (2 professionals and 3 students) reviewed the applications and vote for the final decisions

ICE Bham will hold an ICE graduates and students evening next week together with the ICE president visit and Dani will be able to talk about EWB-UK and give some flyers in the event in the end.

First Bham PN open meeting/social will on 27 May

- Bristol / Bath - Had a joint ICE/EWB-UK evening talk on WATSAN in emergencies, good turnout. Water training weekend in Cardiff. 4 or 5 Professionals at that. In touch with CIBSE, young engineers group starting in the SW. orla.williams@burohappold.com

- Next year's team structure - Keep it spread out national

- Face2Face vs. Teleconferences - keep teleconf + 1 or 2 face2face meetings a year

- Link to programmes very good, but needs to be better communication from start between programme coordinator & PN member

- HOPEFULLY HAVE A WEEKEND MEETING ONCE NEW TEAM IS PICKED TO BEGIN HANDOVER PROCESS (June or July)

 

AOB: Lara Lewington mentions 'Transition Towns'. Not linked to EWB-UK but may be of interest. Prepares folk for climate change, teaches self-sufficiency and local community living
