Basic First Aid for Overseas Workers – 2nd February 2007 |
|
|
First aid is a basic skill that can and should be learnt by everyone. But the environment can influence the decisions you might need to make. Imagine the scene – you are travelling in your vehicle in a deserted area with just your driver as company. Suddenly you look at the side of the road and see a badly injured man – do you stop? Do you drive past and seek further help? Or do you get out to help and send your driver on to look for further assistance? These questions and many more would be answered on the British Red Cross Basic First Aid for Overseas Workers. The British Red Cross has developed a one-day Basic First Aid course specifically for those people living and working in remote areas overseas with perhaps only minimal access to medical aid. The course was primarily designed for Red Cross delegates but has since been opened up to anyone in need of this form of training. The programme covers all the basic life saving skills in first aid but they are then applied to remote environments. Subjects covered include management of severe blood loss from injuries such as mine or bullet wounds, long term care of casualties who are unconscious, management of casualties who have sustained snake bites and insect stings and improvisation for transport and immobilisation. There are 24 spaces available on a first come first serve basis if you would like to reserve a place please email me on memusi.dutt@ewb-uk.org by Friday the 18th of Jan. The course costs £15 for the day including lunch.
Up and Coming Events Shelter weekend; 15-17th February This will be an introduction to shelter and its importance in the developing world. It will consist of hands on practical and talks. International Development Course; 1st of March A one day conference event with a range of speakers focusing on all areas of international development.
There is currently a small group of people helping to organize these events but if you are interested and have a few hours of your time to give please email me, your help will be greatly appreciated.
Lastly please feel free to forward this email onto anyone else who might find it of interest. Thanks,
Memusi Dutt
