Engineers Without Borders UK Professional Network Bulletin
  25 January 2008 – RedR Special

-       RedR – What is RedR? Who can join?

-       RedR TSS   – RedR's Technical Support Service. Use it - Be a part of it

Hello Professional Network,

Engineers Without Borders UK and RedR UK have recently forged a voluntary partnership in order to better achieve the strategic aims of each organisation.  In particular EWB-UK's Placements programme will benefit significantly with RedR providing funding for a part time employee to work on our behalf (more info).  As a result of this I thought it would be a good time to let give you all a bit of information about RedR, for those who want to use some of its services or become members or volunteers.

RedR UK
www.redr.org.uk

Millions of people's lives are devastated by natural disaster and conflict each year. RedR UK helps to rebuild lives by providing aid workers with the skills they need to make a difference. They do this through delivering expert international and UK training programmes, running a recruitment service and by providing online expertise. They also support a membership network for professionals vital to relief and rehabilitation programmes around the world.

Membership
Members are the lifeblood of RedR. It is the experiences of their members that they use in their training courses, they are ambassadors for RedR and take good practice into the field. When disaster strikes it is the members that are called on to respond first, to help fill essential posts, within aid organisations, at short notice.

Benefits include:

-          professional recognition (RedR membership is seen as a badge of quality within the relief sector)

-          excellent networking opportunities

-          preferential access to RedR's training courses

-          tailored recruitment service

-          discounts on selected events

-          access to our online members' network

-          Technical Support Service for members in the field

Who can join

RedR members are assessed to ensure that they have the right skills and experience to make a positive contribution to humanitarian work. If you pass the panel interview, you become a Registered Member.

As a rough guide, it is recommended that you have at least 2 years professional experience, some of which should be overseas development/humanitarian or site experience. If you have a number of years of UK based experience, but have not done so much overseas, then attendance at RedR (or similar) training courses can also contribute to your application. It is a myth that only chartered engineers should apply: besides the fact that RedR supplies health professionals, logisticians, managers security specialists and accountants, RedR is keen to recruit competent professionals with the right people skills and technical know-how as members, and does not judge people by the letters after their name.

Technical Support Service (TSS)

RedR's Technical Support Service (TSS) provides free effective technical advice to humanitarian agencies and aid workers. Once an enquiry is recieved, RedR will contact their team of technical experts on your behalf. They aim to send their advice to you by email within 24 to 48 hours and will continue to provide assistance to you. Go to www.redr.org.uk/en/What_We_Do/TSS for more information or to submit an enquiry

RedR's team of technical experts includes aid workers, academics and those working in the corporate sector. Similar criteria apply as for membership. If you have relevant technical and/or field experience, and would like to provide assistance to this valuable service please get in touch with Toby Gould (toby@redr.org)
