Hydropolitics Lecture
Hydropolitics: Water Shortage and Conflict
Professor Ewan W Anderson
With a focus on the Middle East, the region with the most acute shortage and one most commonly mentioned in the context of water wars, water will be discussed as a strategic resource and a range of possible counter measures to alleviate scarcity will be considered. The potential for conflict and the likely flashpoints will be assessed. Is it all polemic or will there be fighting over water?
Ewan Anderson is Emeritus Professor of Geopolitics at the University of Durham, having been a member of staff in the Geography and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies Departments, and Visiting Professor at the University of Exeter . Professor Anderson's research, writing and teaching has focused upon geopolitics: the application of all facets of geography in political decision-making and development studies.
The General University Programme (GULP) recommences on Wednesday, 7 February 2007 in 8 West, 1.1. Admission is free, just turn up on the evening. Free parking available in the West Car Park. All sessions run from 5.15pm until 6.15pm with the exception of the first lecture, which starts at 6pm.

EWB Glasgow- Christmas Ceilidh
Ward off the dark winter nights, by dancing in tartan!
Everyone is most welcome to EWB Glasgow's Christmas Ceilidh. We have a live ceilidh band, lots of engineers (and non-engineers!) letting off steam, we have raffle prizes, and if you come along you will have a great time. See the attached poster for details.
EWB Oxford: The Best Thing in Engineering Ever
For 5 years the Comedy Research Project has been testing the hypothesis that science can be funny. Audiences exposed to their shows have consistently laughed up to 63% more than control audiences locked into adjacent rooms, suggesting that Dr. Helen Pilcher and Timandra Harkness are more than just placebo comedians.
Now they plan to bring the same rigorous research methodologies to engineering. Facts will be deformed by the forces of twisted humour, and the audience’s tolerance for puns will be measured with the most up-to-date equipment. We have no plans to test the audience to destruction, but rapid joke prototyping software will be used on any hecklers

Havana Water Project Talk
Robert Cottrell, Hugo Baker and Hayley Sharp will present The Havana Water Project - The Trip to Cuba.
Earlier this summer 4 students from Bristol University secured funding to go out to Havana, Cuba to meet with their counter parts at CUJAE, the Polytechnic of Havana.
The Havana Water project team at Bristol has been working closely with a group of students and young Professors at CUJAE over the past year looking at Havana’s inefficient and under funded water network. The aim of the trip was to improve communication with the teams partners in Havana, collect valuable information including maps of the system, build better relationships with local water boards and view the proposed area that a solution will be implemented in.
Two team members will talk about their experiences in Havana, what the project is about and the what future developments there will be in the next year. The project is also going to be entered into this years prestigious Mondialogo Engineering Award with the hope of winning the top prize of 20,000 Euros.
We are looking for keen engineering students to get involved in the project this year.If you are interested in the project or just want to know a little more then please come along to the talk send us an email.
The project would like to thank the following people and organisations for their kind support:
Professor Eric Thomas - Vice Chancellor, Mr Derek Pretty - Registrar and the Alumni Foundation
Professor Ian Cluckie, Mrs Marghi Peacock, Staff and students at CUJAE
and
Mr Carlos Fernandez - Aballi
