Outreach & Education
The Bristol Outreach Programme is essentially about promoting the importance of sustainability, environmental awareness and development to pupils and young students still in school. Not only is awareness of these issues among young people important, but it is also a fantastic way to get young people enthusiastic about engineering.
An extract from the EWB-Bristol AGM 2007, reviewing the past year of events:
EWB Bristol has recently formed an outreach team to develop workshops and presentations to take into local schools to teach children about the importance of issues such as water and renewable energy resources. We hope that highlighting these principles and engaging them in practical activities will raise their awareness of sustainable development issues.
We have a four person team developing our own workshop to raise awareness of solar energy. This will involve schoolchildren being given a presentation on solar energy and then given the materials to build their own model solar powered car. The storage of energy will also be demonstrated through capacitance. We will pilot this project with university students first and start taking it to schools in 2008.
Later this year, we intend to run the Water for the World workshop in schools over the next year. This project, which has been developed by EWB Canada, involves giving a presentation on water, a quiz and water filtration activity.
We are looking at progressively expanding the number of workshops offered and building links with local schools. We hope to achieve this through close contact with EWB-UK, and with support from the university and its links to local schools.
