Fireworks Spectacular
On Wed 5th Nov, members went to one of Birmingham's greatest fireworks displays at Pype Hayes Park, near Sutton Coldfield. This event was followed by a trip to a curry house.
EWB-Birmingham's Multi Disciplinary Weekend Training Course (AKA EWB-Birmingham's Interactive weekend at the Guild!) June 2008
We held our first one last year which we hope to become an annual event. It was very successful with students attending from various disciplines from all over the UK. It included a slum development role-play, guest speakers including Practical Action, interactive sessions on world economy, Micro-Credit Schemes and Post Disaster Reconstruction, practical workshops on solar cookers, food dryers and crystal radios and much more.
Visit to the Centre for Alternative Technology Feb 2008
Eight members of EWB-Birmingham went on a weekend trip to CAT near Machynllaeth in Mid-Wales with members from the Nottingham and Bristol branches. Here they explored solutions to some of the most serious challenges facing our planet, such as climate change, pollution and the waste of precious resources. A great time was had by all.
Presentation from International Alert, Feb 2008
Hannah Lewis, a representative from International Alert came to give a talk to our branch about the organisation’s activities. There was a good turn out and everybody found the presentation useful in terms of development for the future. The presentation was followed by a free buffet provided by the society which encouraged members to stay behind and find out more about the organisation.
Christmas Social 2007
For our Christmas Social, we watched the Broad Street Canal Boat Light Parade near Broad Street before going for a meal at La Tasca - a Tapas Bar and Restaurant just off Broad Street. The Canal Boat Light Parade consisted of 20 decorated boats winding their way from outside the NIA, through Brindley Place, under Broad Street and down to the Mailbox. Slade legend NODDY HOLDER was floating down the canal on a glam rock inspired barge! It certainly put everybody in the Christmas spirit.
Jongleurs Social 2007
Members of EWB-Birmingham went to a comedy club on Broad Street for their Autumn Term Social. A good laugh was had by all!
Shared Planet 2007
Six members of EWB-Birmingham attended the Shared Planet weekend at Sheffield University 16th-18th November 2007. Shared Planet is the UK’s largest annual student conference on world poverty, human rights and the environment, hosted by People & Planet. It brings hundreds of students together for a weekend packed with big-name speakers, skills and issues workshops, debates, discussions, art, and a massive party!
At Shared Planet 2007, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of Shared Planet which coincided with the renaming of Third World First to People & Planet.
Vale Fest 2007
EWB-Birmingham participated in the University of Birmingham's Vale Festival. This year we took along last year's wind turbine as well as a solar cooker we have been building over the past few weeks. The event was as great as ever with the weather being kind to us. The parabolic solar cooker was a great success with a pot of water reaching boiling point throughout the day. The wind turbine managed to reach over 2 volts. Vale Fest 2007 was all about climate change so our exhibits fitted in nicely. Over 2000 tickets were sold with all profits going to Kids for Kids and Action Aid. Well done and a big thank-you to everyone involved.
Water Aid Speaker 2006
On the 11th June 2006 Amy, a fundraiser for Water Aid, and Eric, a specialist engineer came to talk to EWB-Birmingham. Amy gave us a great overview of the great work carried out by Water Aid and some startling figures on the number of people who die from the lack of clean water and sanitation. Eric gave a terrific slide show backed up by many personal stories of his work in South Africa and Water Aids work in Tanzania. It was interesting to find out how very simple technology such as latrines and borehole pumps can make a significant difference to peoples lives. Water Aid also ensures that the constructions are sustainable by training local people to maintain the equipment and through the funding mix from Water Aid, the local government and the local population, allocates money to local mechanics to source parts for the equipment ensuring that it can always be fixed. We would like to say a big thank you to both Amy and Eric for coming and sharing their experiences and would welcome them both back.
Vale Festival 2006
EWB-Birmingham was one of the societies participating in the Vale Festival on 6th June 06. This festival is organized by students of the University to raise awareness of AIDS in Africa. A great day out was had by all with all profits going to charity. EWB-Birmingham built a wind turbine and also demonstrated the many uses of solar panels.
Vale Fest 2006 raised £25,000 for UNICEF and SPW.
