Outreach Team
The EWB-UK Outreach programme is run by a team of EWB-UK members around the country who:
- Look to find innovative and creative ways to inspire and educate younger generations (up to 18 years of age) through interactive activities, about global issues and to raise awareness of the importance of engineering in International Development
- This is achieved through close collaboration with the EWB-UK Branches to develop and implement outreach activities providing national coordination, guidance and support. The team also liaises with academia and NGOs of the development sector to create an Outreach Network for knowledge sharing and to provide a future direction for EWB-UK’s Outreach activities.
The team members are collectively responsible for the effective running of the Outreach programme. It is an exciting role which provides a unique experience of working with teenagers and school children to make them aware of global priorities such as poverty and climate change mitigation, of how they their decisions in life can potentially affect the quality of life of millions across the globe and to motivate them to follow tertiary education, especially in engineering sciences.
The Outreach Team needs volunteers who recognise the challenges but also the immediate and long term rewards of working with young people. This will be the second year that the Outreach team has been coordinated nationally and so this will give you the unique opportunity to help define its direction and see drastic the results of your hard work. Team members may undertake a variety of roles throughout the year, some examples of which are given below. The average time commitment is about 2-4 hours per week on average, with more time needed on certain occasions such as training weekends etc . In our experience though, these are also times with lots of get-togethers and fun socials!
Examples of roles undertaken include:
- Conducting research into the vast array of different Outreach activities implemented by Corporations, NGOs, other EWB organisations, Engineering Institutions and Universities. This research helps prevent duplication of effort and also identifies where EWB-UK can have the greatest impact. It is also vital in helping create an EWB-UK Outreach Network and develop new outreach activities and ways to make them more engaging, creative and fun.
- Helping branches to develop their own contact base of schools and also their own outreach material. This ranges from facilitating and supporting collaboration between branches and other organisations with already existing outreach material and resources to helping students who are keen to produce their own outreach material in their area of interest.
- Thinking strategically about the ongoing development of the scheme - a great chance to influence the direction of one of EWB-UK’s more recent areas of activity.
Deadline for applications is 6pm on Saturday 28th June 2008.
