Branches in the Midlands
EWB-Birmingham started in 2005/06 and won 'Best New Student Group' at their Students' Union end of year awards. Membership numbers increase year on year as their committee grows stronger.
The branch has an EWB-UK Bursaries Review Panel as well as an Outreach team and also tackle technical eco-friendly projects throughout the year. Past projects include a wind turbine and a parabolic solar cooker. Their committee is also dedicated to inviting guest speakers and organising socials throughout the three academic terms. They end the year with their annual Multi Disciplinary Weekend Training Course in June which in the past has included slum development role-plays, guest speakers, interactive sessions on world economy and micro-credit schemes and practical workshops on solar cookers, food dryers and crystal radios.
EWB-Nottingham started in September 2004. Since then a number of practical projects have been undertaken including the building of a wind turbine, a mirco-hydro project and a biodiesel project. This year there is still a strong focus on projects and there has also been a number of talks and a trip to the Centre for Alternative Technology. EWB-Nottingham has also begun to run the Water for the World outreach programme that has been very successful.
EWB Sheffield have developed a number of branch projects with local and international dimensions. Currently four groups are working on projects including outreach, researching and campaigning, and there are more in the pipeline. Branch members enjoy a range of regular events, from watching films to making vegetable soup on their very own smokeless stove.
The branch has undergone an increase in membership since 2006 when many of the initial research projects began and now has around thirty actively involved members.
