There are many ways in which you could get involved with EWB, engineering student or not. For a start, and to find out more about what we do, feel free to speak to any of us, or email us via this contact form (it does go to a real person!) Other things that might interest you include:
- Coming to one of our talks, where distinguished experts are invited to lecture on development issues and their own experiences. An accurate schedule of these talks can be found here, or on our termcard.
- Coming on an EWB trip - these have in the past included an inspiring day visit to the Renewable Energy Systems (RES) low-carbon headquarters in Hertfordshire, where environmentally-sound heating and power systems such as wind turbines and underground heat storage have been successfully put into practice, and an exciting weekend-long excursion to the Centre of Alternative Technology (CAT) in Wales, where participants stayed in eco-cabins and took part in a variety of practical workshops and tutorials. See here for future trips.
- Attending one of the various training courses that we organise over the course of the year. These have ranged in subject from shelter in disaster recovery to the role of cutting-edge IT and communications technology in international development. These are an excellent opportunity to get your hands dirty - an antidote to a heavily theoretical Cambridge degree course! See the training schedule.
- Coming along to one of our committee meetings (announced here and on the mailing list) - a great way of finding out everything EWB - where you might get involved in helping to run our branch. We also have frequent social events, such as formals, bowling etc, where anyone is very welcome!
- You could help us financially by attending a fundraising event in support of EWB-UK.
These include street collections in Cambridge organised with Cambridge RAG, and sponsorship events such as the Three Peaks Challenge and the Cardiff Half Marathon. See the fundraising schedule.
- EWB-UK also organises 3-month summer placements each year on overseas development projects for volunteers at various levels, from "entry level" (1st- and 2nd-year students) to young graduates up to 4 years out of uni. Longer placements of up to 12 months are also available. See the placements page.
- Also at National level, EWB-UK proposes and funds a large number of research projects which can be taken up by students as 4th-year or postgraduate research projects (most commonly done as the 4th year of an engineering degree). If you're really keen, you may even be able to do one in your free time! See the research page for more details.
