The training team was formed to design and run courses to develop the necessary skills for the useful deployment of participants in a development context. This is done in a fun manner, getting hands on experience and learning from professionals in the sector.

An extract from the EWB-Bristol AGM 2007, reviewing the past year of events:

Last April, the EWB World Wide Water South West Training Event took place, organised between the Bristol, Bath and Cardiff branches of EWB with help from Halcrow and Buro Happold. The course gave an introduction to water and sanitation in a development engineering context. Each day consisted of hands on practical activities, such as water filtration and building hand pumps, alongside talks by professionals on modern and relevant subjects, such as the politics of water.

A debate about dams took place as well as a water role play on water sanitation in slum communities. Some 30 students participated in the weekend, and we hope to run this course again in 2008. This term we have already sent 7 Bristol students to the infamous Clare Farm Development Training weekend, making Bristol the best represented branch there. We have also sent 4 students to a Cardiff energy orientated training weekend, and 4 to the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), Wales.

EWB Bristol will be organising a number of further training events over the coming year in conjunction with the other South West branches; we are supporting Cardiff in organising their Shelter Weekend. Funding from DfID (Department for International Development) means that training will have a full-time employee who will help us in the process of organising the training weekends and there will be more financial support for future training weekends.

The training team are hoping to organise an EWB South-West training competition here in Bristol, where teams of 5-10 students representing branches from Cardiff, Bath and Bristol work against the clock to design and build a temporary structure with limited resources. We also hope to arrange some practical afternoon courses in themes such as truss building and pipeline design, so keep your eyes peeled!
