The Bristol Outreach Program is essentially about promoting the importance of sustainability, environmental awareness and development to pupils and young students still in school. Not only is awareness of these issues among young people important, but it is also a fantastic way to get young people enthusiastic about engineering.

The Bristol Outreach team, although relatively new, is very keen and motivated. Over the past year we have run our first ever in-school activity (Water for the World), which was a great success and helped us establish new links both within the University and with schools in the surrounding area.

We also ran a workshop with visiting sixth form students on behalf of the Widening Participation department of Bristol University, as well as numerous pilots and workshops with the university students.

Now the Solar Car Project is also finished, we are excited about getting into schools to do the presentation and we have already a number of possible dates which is great.

Currently we provide two presentations (both of which are very flexible and last approx. 90 minutes each), involving small workshops in each;

The first is the Water for the World, where after a presentation on water and how important this precise resource is, the students make their own water filter from simple materials. This is being widely used by EWB-UK, and we used it for our first ever in-school activity last June.

The second is a new and recently completed project called the Solar Car Project; after a presentation about solar energy and how and where we can harness it, the children have the chance to build a small solar car and run it, hopefully demonstrating the useful yet slightly limited capacity for solar power.

New members to Outreach are always welcome, as it there is a wide range of positions to fill, whether it be helping with a workshop, doing the presentation, or helping to refine and improve the projects, or just spreading the word about Outreach!

We are also hoping to develop new workshops related to Transport, Food, Shelter, Recycling and IT.
