The landmark work by E.F. Schumacher Small is Beautiful changed the face of development economics.

Through interactive workshops, this course will look at how technology can be used as a tool for poverty alleviation. In this exciting opportunity to discuss some of the main ideas behind International Development today, participants will look into ways in which inappropriate technology has proved to be perhaps an even bigger barrier that previously existed and the importance in appropriate technology and working in line with the focus community.

Course Outcomes:

  • To give participants a greater understanding of the debates surrounding people vs. machinery.
  • To explore Schumacher’s ideas as voiced in “Small is Beautiful” and how they have been put into action.
  • To exhibit some examples of appropriate technology and evaluate successes and failures.
  • To find out more about microfinance and the benefits it can bring to communities.
